Liberty City

Segregation, memory, and community renewal in Miami’s Liberty City. Far removed from the tony beaches of Miami’s south coast, Liberty City was created in the 1930s as a segregated neighborhood for Miami’s African American residents. Remnants of the segregation wall still stand today, running along 12th Avenue as a physical marker of that history. This documentary centers on community-led efforts to rebuild civic life in inner-city Miami. It follows a group of local teenagers working to create a public monument on the segregation wall—an attempt to reclaim a history whose meaning had been forgotten by many. The film also embeds with the Circle of Brotherhood, a group of men confronting violence, disinvestment, and inequality from within the neighborhood, and with a Miami police officer born and raised in Liberty City, now patrolling the same streets while grappling with his role as an African American officer in his own community.
